Evaluation of ADL and MMSE-K of the Aged in Rural Areas

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the ADL(activity of the daily life) and the
MMSE- K(cognitive function) of the aged in thr ee public health clinics of Uisung-gun
province from August 16 to October 15, 1998.
In general characteristics , the average age was 72.1, and 75.5% of the group was
uneducated. T here were statistically significant differences in factors such as standard of
education, religion , presence or absence of spouse, occupation, and financial situation
between males and females.
In comparing the ADL according to general characteristics , the ratio of the highest ADL
was 93.9%, the middle was 4.6%, and the lowest was 1.5%. There were statistically
significant differences in factor s such as current occupation, share of living expenses in
male group, while in female group there were statistically significant differences in factors
such as age, family, organization, current occupation, and share of living expenses .
In comparing the MMSE- K according to general characteristics , there were st atistically
significant differences in factor s such as age, standard of education, curr ent occupation,
share of living expenses and subjective financial situation in male group, while in female
group there were statistically significant differences in factors such as age, standard of
education, religion, pr sence or absence of spouse, family organization, current occupation,and share of living expenses.
T here were st atistically significant differences in the correlation between the ADL and
the MMSE- K. In the ability of the MMSE- K according to the ADL, the r atio of normal
ADL group was 98.7% in the highest , 4.6% in the middle, and 0% in the lowest ADL
group. The ratio of the highest ADL group was 78.3% in the highest , 15.9% in the middle,
and 5.8% in the lowest ADL group
The result of Regression analysis according to general characteristics revealed that
standard of education and ability to conduct daily life had a positive, while age, presence
or absence of spouse, occupation , and religion had a negative effect on MMSE- K.
